Champagne house Veuve Clicquot
The Champagne with the Famous Yellow Label
Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin is the second-largest champagne house after Moët & Chandon. The house gained prominence under Nicole-Barbe Clicquot-Ponsardin, the widow of founder Philippe Clicquot. After Philippe Clicquot passed away at a young age, she dedicated herself wholeheartedly to champagne. In tribute to her, Veuve Clicquot produced a champagne bearing her name, the Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame. Today, Veuve Clicquot is owned by the LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy) conglomerate, which also owns the champagne houses Moët & Chandon, Krug and Ruinart.
The champagne from Veuve Clicquot, with the famous Yellow label, is known for its elegance and consistently high quality. Veuve Clicquot often introduces the classic Veuve Clicquot Brut in striking packaging, such as the Veuve Clicquot Trunk and the Veuve Clicquot Arrow (Magnetic) from the ‘Clicquot journey’ collection. These special editions of Veuve Clicquot are highly popular among enthusiasts and are released in Limited Editions. In 1877, Veuve Clicquot was already forward-thinking when they introduced the Yellow Label, and at that time, the bright yellow color was very striking and unusual for champagne. With their avant-garde style, they set the trend in the world of champagne and the brand is popular among a broad audience of champagne enthusiasts of all ages.
Veuve Clicquot Champagne
The most famous champagne from the house is the Veuve Clicquot Brut. An elegant, powerful champagne with a perfect balance. For this champagne, grapes from over 50 different crus are used.
The Veuve Clicquot Rosé is a fruity rosé champagne first produced in 1818. It achieves a beautiful balance through a blend with a percentage of 44-48% Pinot Noir, 13 to 18% Meunier, 25 to 29% Chardonnay, and the addition of 12% red wine.
A very different type of champagne is the Veuve Clicquot Rich; this is a champagne with a blend that is perfect for mixing with fruit and drinking on the rocks. A refreshing champagne with aromas of citrus and summer flowers and a fine 'creamy' foam.
How 'La Grande Dame de la Champagne' Made the Champagne Brand Great
Philippe Clicquot started the champagne house in 1772 under the name Clicquot. His son, François Clicquot, continued the business. When he passed away at the age of 27 in 1805, his widow, Nicole-Barbe Clicquot-Ponsardin, took over the leadership. Nicole-Barbe Clicquot-Ponsardin passionately continued the house, and with her business acumen and love for champagne, the brand became an international success.
By daring to take significant risks and devising clever tricks, she managed to bypass the trade blockades and embargoes that existed in Europe at that time, quickly gaining control of the Russian market. Later, Veuve Clicquot champagne was also established in the rest of Europe and America, earning the house worldwide recognition. In 1818, Veuve Clicquot produced the very first Rosé champagne, and in 1910, the first vintage champagne was created.
Nicole-Barbe Clicquot-Ponsardin was an international figure and earned the nickname 'La Grande Dame de champagne.' As a tribute to her, the champagne house produced a prestigious grand cru champagne with her name, the Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame, during its 200th anniversary in 1972.
