Champagne house Castellane
The Champagne with the Striking Cross in the Logo
Castellane Champagne House was founded in 1895 by Count Florens de Castellane in Épernay. The distinctive cross on the logo displayed on the label pays tribute to the oldest regiment in the Champagne region, as St. Andrew was the patron saint of the area. The logo with the red cross was designed by Count Florens de Castellane himself.
The Castellane Experience in Épernay
Today, the house is part of the Champagne house Laurent Perrier. The company is now owned by the Mérand-Nonancourt family but still carries the name Castellane with which the Champagne house began in 1895. The champagne is aged in the 9-kilometer-long cellars beneath Épernay. The Champagne house owns several beautiful art-nouveau buildings on Avenue de Champagne. The building with the distinctive 66-meter-high tower, symbolizing Épernay, is also part of the Castellane Champagne house. The main building also houses a Champagne museum. The house is a member of the ‘Union des Maisons de Champagne’ (UMC), and the cellars are worth a visit. The address is: Castellane Champagne House, 63 Avenue de Champagne, 51200, Épernay, France.
Castellane Champagnes
The most popular champagne from Castellane is the Champagne Castellane Brut, which is a blend of 40% pinot noir, 30% pinot meunier, and 30% chardonnay, with a reserve wine share of 15%. The brut is aged for 2 years in the cellars located in the chalk cliffs beneath Épernay.
Castellane Brut Rosé champagne is a fruity and floral champagne with a salmon-pink color. An elegant champagne with subtle notes of strawberry and red currant. The Brut Rosé has a blend of 40% pinot noir, 30% pinot meunier, and 30% chardonnay, with 15 to 17% red wine added depending on the harvest year. The champagne is aged for 24 to 30 months in the cellars, after which the dosage is added with a mix of chardonnay and pinot noir, followed by an additional 3 months of rest.
Champagne Castellane Demi-Sec has a yellow-gold color and is characterized by a large share of pinot noir (40%), complemented by chardonnay (30%) and pinot meunier (30%). The wine is aged for 5 months in wooden barrels, and after bottling, it matures for an additional 24 months in the wine cellars. It is a smooth, rich champagne with aromas of rose, peach, cinnamon, and hazelnut. A delightful aperitif, it also pairs well with sweet, fresh dishes or as a dessert wine.
